A Research Statistic

Another interesting thing I learned from the workshops on poverty is that I fit perfectly into statistical research.  On average, it takes three generations to move from poverty to a college degree in immigrant families:

(1)  Unskilled immigrant has a very hard work ethic
(2)  Next generation receives high school diplomas
(3)  Third generation receives college degrees, most often in a government related field, especially teaching

I have an unskilled immigrant grandparent on both my maternal and paternal side.

For the past few years I've contemplated on the progression of the family over the years and what made the difference for some while others haven't progressed as much.  Education is key, along with adhering to good moral values, generally within a church setting.

Statistics aren't usually very touching, but this one was to me.  I felt especially grateful to those who wanted their posterity to have a better life and paid the price for me to have all that I do, both materially and intellectually.  Thank goodness I had tissue in my bag.

Thanks Mom & Dad, Grandma & Grandpa Versluis, and Grandma & Grandpa Smith!  (My Grandma Smith's maiden name was Heidel.)

  1. Interesting. Although my family doesn't fit the statistical mold (on either side), I can still see how education and good moral values have shaped and strengthened us.
